Why MIPI is not suitable for industrial displays

One of the most important requirements for industrial customers is long term availability. This is why it is more than surprising that MIPI displays are offered for industrial purpose. Read here why MIPI is not the preferred solution for industrial TFTs.

What is a MIPI display?

A so called MIPI TFT display is a display with a MIPI-DSI interface which is specified by the MIPI Alliance. The members of this alliance develop interfaces exclusively for the mobile communications industry. The main objectives of the MIPI-DSI interface are: high performance, low power consumption and low electromagnetic interference while reducing pin count and maintaining compatibility across different vendors. Every smartphone display is based on this interface.

A further benefit of these displays is that they are only produced in mass production and therefore the prices are very low. But that also means that all MIPI-Displays which are available on the market are currently produced for smartphone application only. On this fast consumer market every year new smartphones with new displays are developed and because of the high quantities (e.g. Samsung Galaxy S7: >55mil. pcs.) the tooling costs doesn’t matter.

That means that the product lifecycle is very short and the long-term availability doesn’t exist. Nobody will care about an additional customer with an annual demand of 10k pieces. And that is why a product change notification in due time doesn’t exists either.

 

MIPI-DSI protocol

Another big challenge is the MIPI-DSI protocol. Besides a data protocol for the image data there is a SPI interface for configuration. Every display has a different command set. That’s why it is not possible to switch the display. If the customer wants to use a different display, the programming has to start from zero. As nobody cares about small customers ( less than 1mill. pieces/year) in the MIPI world, documentation and application nodes for the programming are hard to get.>

 

What is the Solution?

  • The use of standard technologies (TFT-LCD) with standard sizes and standard resolutions
  • The application of well documented interfaces, standard for 15 years: digital RGB (TTL)
  • Standardized pinout of the FPC connector e.g. the family-TFT interface of LCD-Mikroelektronik

Historic Discovery

As a long-established design house for display applications, LCD-Mikroelektronik can draw on decades of experience. Our founder experimented with the first liquid crystals already in the seventies of the last century. Here are some finds from a long time ago:

1. One of the first segment displays of LCD Mikroelektronik, which is probably more than 25 years old and has a green-yellow illumination. The display does not yet have its own display driver.

2. On this display the chip was turned by 180° and installed upside-down and has its own gap in the printed circuit board to reduce the overall height. For correct positioning, the display is fixed by a lateral spring. The light guide sends the light from behind over both sides through a prism effect onto the display.

 

3. Self-built display with silver wires and space for a total of 9 ICs on the two glasses.

Low power passive matrix display

LCD-Mikroelektronik provides passive matrix displays with power usage of under 150 uA for energy critical applications!

Of course the power usage depends also on the displayed content. With six different contents  a power consumption range from 125 to 296 uA with a setting of a reference voltage of 8,35V, a booster of 3xVDD2 and a duty cycle of 1/128 could be measured.

 

The shown display is a low power monochrome FSTN positive matrix display with an SPI interface, FPC connector and a resolution of 128 x 128 dots. It has an active area of 55 x 55 mm and an operating temperature of -20  to +70°C, the drive method is 1/128 duty with a bias of 1/12.

The used power saving controller IST7920 comes from “Integrated Solutions Technology”. It supports a SPI, I²C as well as 6800 and 8080 interface. By  reducing the reference voltage, the booster and the duty cycle even the very low data between 55- to 94uA on the six different contents can be reached:

Sunlight readable displays

Normal displays, especially TFTs, are difficult to read in direct sunlight. If you want to make them sunlight readable, you need to consider some points in the design of your TFT module.

1. The surface brightness must be at least 500 cd/m2, in fact it is better to provide e.g. 800 cd/m2.

You may notice that you will increase the brightness of your smartphone in direct sunlight. If you decrease the brightness, the TFT seems to be black. So an essential point in order to design sunlight readable applications is to increase the surface brightness with a powerful backlight.

2. Use an anti-glare surface or anti-reflection coating. 

With a special anti-glare lens or anti-reflection coating you can reduce reflections on the surface of the module, which make the TFT difficult to read in direct sunlight.

3. Use optical bonding of front-glass and touch to display

Additional boundary layers in the module, between frontglass and touch as well as touch to TFT, cause additional reflections. Eliminating those boundaries by bonding the parts with optical clear adhesive or optical clear resin, will increase sunlight readability.

Plastic front lens

Plastic front lens

A robust and light alternative to a front glass can be a PMMA coverlens.

Such coverlenses are available in different standard thicknesses and can be printed according to the customer requirements.

Hidden printing can be applied, as can be seen int he following picture. The buttons are not visible in normal mode, only if lighted up.

The edge can be cut to fit the customer housing conditions:

While breakage safety is better for PMMA than for glass, the drawback is the surface hardness. Screatches are more likely than for normal glass.

Flexible E-paper

E-paper can be bonded to several substrates, besides glass also PCB or flexible plastic can be used.

By using ultra thin plastic layers these e-papers offer new usage types. They can be used on curved or other flexible materials. 

Wir are able to offer such e-paper in different sizes as custom or standard module.

The pictures shows a flexible module with ten digits and battery status, which can be used e.g. in wearable devices due to its small size.

Anti-reflection film

TFT modules with gasket bonding have an air gap between touch sensor and TFT. This gap leads to reflections in the TFT and is also the reason why TFTs look greyish, not black, in power off state.

The traditional solution to this problem is full-lamination, however this option is costly and not suitable for all types of cell and coverlens combinations.

An anti-reflection - moth eye - film can be a cost efficient alternative eliminating interfering reflections.

In off state, the module looks more blackish, which gives the application a fine look.

O-film - wide viewing angle solution

A well-known problem of TN TFTs is the reduced viewing angle for one direction. For this direction the picture will be inverted. 

While a typical solution is the usage of expensive MVA or IPS cells instead of TN cells, which provide better viewing angles for all directions, there is also a more cost-efficient technology.

A special polarizer - o-film - can be used to increase the viewing angle.

The picture shows one module with o-film (left), the other without. While the left one shows normal colors, the right one is difficult to read.

However, also the disadvantages should be mentioned. The brightness and contrast will be decreased by o-film and in fact o-film is more expensive than normal polarizer.

As a conclusion it can be said that o-film can be a good solution to enhance exhisting modules or provide low-budget wide viewing angle solutions.

O-film is suitable for many TN cells. Contact us for details.

Celebrating our 30th anniversary

We welcome you to our new website, in time to celebrate the 30th birthday of LCD-Mikroelektronik.

It has been in 1986 when Dr. Bruno Hampel and his son Albert Hampel founded LCD-Mikroelektronik, which was at that time known as Crystop Handelsgesellschaft. Small LCD series were manufactured in house, while at that time LCDs were imported from Japan or Korea.

Today LCD-Mikroelektronik has grown to 25 employees working in development, sales, operations and our in-house assembly. The portfolio grew from segment LCDs to all kinds of passive LCDs, TFTs, OLED, E-paper and Boards.

Our goal is to provide sophisticated LCD solutions, combined with reasonable prices and high quality to our customers in various industries. Thanks to our experienced team and realiable suppliers we follow this vision every day.
